SUPERFLOW Downpipes

Downpipes are installed between turbochargers and exhaust systems in turbo-charged vehicles. Most downpipes are provided with a flange for connection. The downpipe should correspond to the conditions in the respective vehicle, so that problem-free installation is possible. The lambda probe is often located after the flange. An additional connection for a broadband lambda probe (for measuring the lambda values ​​for software adaptation) is usually placed in front of the catalytic converter, as this falsifies the ratio of the air-petrol mixture. The transition to the next component, the sports catalytic converter, takes place via a flexible connection. This exhaust gas decoupling element is a flexible part of an exhaust gas system and is colloquially called a flexible pipe. To ensure the longest possible service life of a SUPERFLOW downpipe, only high-quality flexible pipes made of stainless steel are used at SUPERFLOW. These flexible tubes are provided with flexible wire mesh on the outside and with teeth made of several stainless steel rings on the inside. Because the flexible pipe can be bent flexibly, it can reduce vibrations coming from the engine and thus relieve the rest of the exhaust system. The downpipe then either consists of a continuous pipe. However, it is also possible to get most SUPERFLOW downpipes with a sports catalytic converter, a silencer or a dummy catalytic converter.

The same rule applies for downpipes or pre-catalytic converter pipes as for the rest of the exhaust system: the larger the diameter, the better and faster the exhaust gas pressure can escape and the turbocharger can turn up more freely. By using a flow-optimized SUPERFLOW downpipe, there is a reduction in exhaust gas back pressure. This results in an increase in power and torque, and reduces the thermal load on the peripheral components. In addition to improved responsiveness and more dynamics, this results in a more pronounced sound image.

An exhaust gas decoupling element is a flexible part of an exhaust gas system and is colloquially called a flexible pipe. To ensure the longest possible service life of a SUPERFLOW downpipe, only high-quality flexible pipes made of stainless steel are used at SUPERFLOW. What is a Catalytic Converter?

A vehicle catalytic converter is used for exhaust gas aftertreatment in vehicles with an internal combustion engine. The task of the catalyst is the chemical conversion of combustion pollutants into non-toxic substances. Honeycomb bodies made of ceramic or metal are located within the catalytic converter housing. These serve to maximize the area overflowed by the exhaust gases. An enlarged surface can improve the chemical course of the reaction and thus the aftertreatment.
